On a fundamental level, MSPAF is an incredibly polite, friendly young man who just wants everyone around him to get along. The fact that the fanbase is so split up and antagonistic is incredibly distressing to him. To this end, he thinks the best way to keep everyone happy is to move lockstep with the (perceived) wishes of The Storyteller and His Enforcers. He is always sure to read exactly what is written, and never assume anything more. He will only read fanfiction if it is a canon pairing, and is always sure to make note of even the slightest differences between the fanfiction author’s portrayal and the “true” portrayal. He only buys commissions from artists who have officially contacted The Storyteller, and is mortified by the idea of others not doing the same. While he genuinely believes following all the rules is the only way to friendship, he doesn’t enforce them on anyone. He believes that everyone will come round on their own, and everyone will be happy then. However, he isn’t an absolute boyscout. When nobody else is watching, MSPAF loves Kanaya<3Jade, a non-canon ship involving an unconfirmed sexuality. He believes they’re absolutely adorable, and would make each other very happy. However, he feels incredibly guilty about this, like he’s betraying his beloved Storyteller.
[[ well you already know i am Canadian. reblogging so that maybe some Canadians who follow me will respond. ehehe ]]
you’re not alone!
[[ I’m from Toronto, and actually lead a fairly big group of Toronto/Ontario Homestuck fans (apparently, it was totally sprung on me one day).
We’re gonna be chilling at FanExpo :> ]]
supsup 8) oakville, here!
Waterloo but after December Vancouver. I’ll also be at FanEXPO. We’re organizing a Homestuck dinner on the Saturday if anyone wants to come, jump on the MSPA forums and RSVP. Here’s a link. Everyone’s welcome!
MSPAccess, an MSPA Navigation tool for Chrome (AND NOW FIREFOX)
I decided to reread Homestuck in the interim before EoA5 gets released so I made this little google chrome extension for navigating the pages more easily. You can use the left and right arrows go to backwards and forwards and the 0 key on the numpad to open and close pesterlogs. It’s lightweight and makes fullscreen couch reading a lot more fun.
So looks like my first attempt at this was a failure. Maybe next time I’ll plan better, either way it was a fun experience. I don’t think I’ll be able to finish it to my satisfaction before the Jam deadline (tonight at 10 eastern) so I’m just going to relax and finish the game at my own pace. I’ll post the final results here.
“My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”—Jack Layton (via themanctuary)
I consider this an early start, taking into account the fact that I was drinking last night. I’m going to see about getting an engine started right now. I’ll be making the game in Adobe Flash and Actionscript 3.0. Here we go.
This weekend (Starting Friday the 19th at 10PM Easter) will be the Ludum Dare 48 Hour Game Design Competition. I’ll be taking part along with some friends of mine from school. The final round of voting has begun for the theme. I’m doubtful that I’ll actually finish a game in 48 hours but I plan to take part in the Game Jam which gives you an extra day to polish your work. I plan to use this post as a liveblog of my work so I’ll be updating it every few hours over the weekend with images and experiences. Wish me luck!
Wow, this is what's it's like to suddenly have people read my blog!
Wow, my Congastuck post managed to get me a traffic increase of (at this moment) 2,418.75%! (I really like Google analytics for useless but fun data like this). Before today I didn’t know what reblogs and likes looked like on the Tumblr dashboard. Now I do! Thanks everyone who liked what I made. I guess I’ll post my Homestuck stuff here more often!
I’m also glad to see I’m drawing some more attention to Homestrife, the Homestuck Fighting Game I’m a part of. Please check out the wiki and forum post and contribute if you can!
Homestrife 4 1/3 or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Title
Lately I have been taking part in a fan community game development project called Homestrife (Full title in logo). It’s been a lot of fun so I thought I’d share what we have so far and talk a little about the process.
I was casually fooling around with my google account when I remembered I had Google analytics set up for this blog, needless to say the 18% drop in readership over the last 30 days is highly disturbing! I don’t even know how an 18% drop is possible since I have less than 5 readers… Oh well, now’s not the time to worry about math, I have to create content!
So how about a life update? I just got back from a week long vacation back to Vancouver. Needless to say I miss the glorious west coast already. I have roughly 6 more months left in Ontario before I can call BC my home again. If I didn’t get to see you while I was back, I’m sorry.
In my spare time I’ve been working on some game design with some people from the mysterious realm of Internet. I’ll probably do a standalone post about that in the coming days. (But knowing me, probably not)
I’ve purchased my tickets to FanEXPO. I may not love Ontario the way I do BC but I plan take full advantage of my proximity to Toronto. Anyone who know’s me probably knows I’m not a huge fan of wearing costumes, but I might break that rule for this.
A few good shows have recently started up again. Adventure Time with Finn and Jake was amazing (as always) but Warehouse 13 left me feeling a little underwhelmed. I get the impression they lost some of their budget this season and it shows. Breaking Bad starts up again soon but I haven’t caught myself up on that one quite yet.
Now, I’m going to go bask in the glory of my newly air conditioned room. Nobody warned me Ontario was going to be this hot!
Yeah, I don’t want to hear it hypothetical reader. I haven’t updated in more than two months. I could apologize profusely for the rest of this update but that wouldn’t be fun for anyone so I’m just going to write…
So there have been some major changes in my life recently. For one, I got a coop job at Research in Motion as a Conceptual Interface Designer. Secondly, I moved clear across the country to Ontario, and lastly, I got dumped by my girlfriend.
I’ve already decided not to waste this post talking about how I never update this blog so I’m certainly not going to spend it whining over this third point. Needless to say it sucked but hey, that’s life. If I’m going to be single for the first time in two years I’m glad it’s far away from my regular life so I don’t have a chance to fall back into routine.
Anyway, talking about my new job is probably a lot more exciting. I work with the team that does pre pre pre pre pre alpha design for RIM, they design the things that inspire the things that one day might get produced. Pretty much none of the work I do will see the light of day but we’re one of the first steps in the ideation process and that means we get to think outside the box which is a lot of fun. For obvious reasons I can’t talk about anything specific that I’m working on but I can say that I’m having a lot of fun and like the team I’m working with.
As for Ontario, I haven’t really had a chance to explore yet but I like the area I’m living it. I’m not, however, a fan of this bitter cold. I thought I knew what cold felt like but I wasn’t prepared for this. Some days I come inside and can’t feel my arms or legs. I envy anywhere in the world that’s not covered in three feet of snow right now.
That’s about it for now. Maybe I’ll post again soon, probably not, we’ll see though.
It’s no secret that I love video games. I may not have mentioned however that my preferred platform is the PC. It’s for this reason that the holidays are a difficult time for me. Steam, the premier downloadable game platform for pc games, has an annual sale and this is the first year I have found myself with a credit card and money in the bank so I have to fight the urge to buy everything. That’s not to say I’m winning however. I’ve purchased 3 indie packs of 5 games for $5 each, the entire Monkey Island series, and Left for Dead 2. I’ve been too busy to play most of them but VVVVVV, Beat Hazard, and Bit.Trip Beat have all been great. When I get some free time I’m going to play L4D2 and I plan to at least sample all the indie game goodness. The sale ends tomorrow so hopefully something else good shows up. Im hoping for a Civ V deal.
I don’t know how I will ever scrape together the content to write a post but here I go. I’m just gonna do a few short topics. Each paragraph is a self contained idea so don’t expect any kind of clarity.
So who is reading my blog from California? I’m just curious. Google analytics shows 1 reader from San Francisco and as far as I know I don’t know anyone from there. It may very well be somebody on a VPN or something but it’d be cool if it weren’t.
Google docs are awesome. My office 2010 beta is expired so I’ve been Google doc-ing everything lately. Not much else to say on that topic. I hope they come out with a desktop application version. Maybe they already have and I’m too lazy to look it up.
PHP and MySQL are fun to learn. Although honestly could MySQL databases be any more needlessly confusing? There’s gotta be a way to just make a simple spreadsheet in excel or whatever and turn it into a database. I don’t need 10 million + options. I’m sure that people who know SQL inside and out think I sound like an idiot right now though.
So Digg is dead to me officially. I’m a full blown Redditor now. I tried to hold on and I’m not gonna rant about Digg V4 because I respect the guys over there too much. Their product no longer interests me though. I still watch Diggnation and it looks like Kevin and Alex are going to keep doing the show minus the Digg part in the future which will be good.
My flash game has made a total of $16 so far in the ~200 days it’s been available. Once this work term is over I might go ahead and try to make a new one that’s more successful. Take a look over on the sidebar at the link called Wordworks and give it a play. If I’m lucky I’ll break $20 before 2011.
Cataclysm is coming out. Yay. Did I mention I’m playing WoW again? I’m a weak individual and I know this about myself. But OH MAN DEATHWING LOOKS SO BADASS. I may post about my Azerothian conquests in the future if I get any.
Got around to updating my resume yesterday. Explaining my current position was difficult. Not much else to say on that.
Anyways. Maybe I’ll think of something to write a real post on soon. Until next time…
Wow, is this blog still around? I had totally assumed that the author like died or got a social life or something. Weird. Oh well, lets see what he has to say this time.
Okay, he’s apologizing for not updating in forever. Jeez that’s original. Like every other crappy blogger on the planet doesn’t make a habit of doing that.
Okay, he’s recapping the intervening month or whatever. Blah blah work blah blah tv blah blah movies blah blah. Oh, cool, he went to Toronto to visit his Girlfriend. That’s pretty fun I guess. I wonder if he took any pictures.
Alright. I’ll admit, this post is a little bit interesting. I bet he thought he was clever when he started writing in then totally remembered the episode of Ze Frank that he stole it from. Then I bet he watched the video and realized he couldn’t do better than that so he wrote this little self aware thing and then stopped writing.
So as I mentioned in previous posts, I’m currently doing my first coop work term at a big company in downtown Vancouver. My job is a little hard to describe thoroughly but essentially I’m here to coach them on how they can use Social Media to improve their company’s internal and external image. The result of this is that I spend a lot of time looking at social media, researching social media, reading about social media and almost no time USING social media. I’ve had to make a conscious effort over the last few days to tweet or check on Facebook. I’ve looked into some consolidation platforms to check all this information in one place but nothing has really caught my eye yet. I’m hoping to blog more over the coming months as I finally feel like I have stuff to talk about.
So with my last blog post my traffic absolutely spiked to the highest single day traffic since I started blogging. Nine! That’s right, nine whole people came to this humble little site in the span of 24 hours and, presumably, read the latest blog post. Google analytics says that they spent an average of 1:36 seconds, most of them around 1 pm local time. I don’t know what I did to deserve such a following but I sure do appreciate it.
Alright, enough sarcasm, time to get to the meat of this post, my motivation for continuing to blog here.
Okay okay okay, seriously, it’s been a month? What the heck have I been doing? Oh right, sitting on my ass wondering what I should write about.
Guess it’s time for another catch up post.
Games: I’ve been playing a fair amount of Starcraft II, not enough to get out of the bronze league mind you but still, a fair amount. I’ve also been playing a lot of Minecraft with my friends. If you haven’t heard of Minecraft then don’t worry, you’re not alone, but you should get on the bandwagon quick. It’s an amazing game from a one man Swedish developer named Notch and, for roughly $10 Canadian, it’s probably the most value you’ll ever get for your money. Additionally I’ve started replaying Wind Waker on the Gamecube. Despite a lot of criticism when it came out this is easily one of my favorite game of that console generation.
TV: Really into British humor at the moment, I sort of lost track of The IT Crowd a while ago so I’ve decided to catch up on that again, in the process I also discovered a fantastic series called Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace which features a few of the actors from The IT Crowd. I’ve also started watching the newer seasons of Doctor Who. I felt like I needed to round out my sci-fi repertoire and this show is fantastic.
Movies: I know it’s a bit late for it now but GO SEE SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD! I can’t stress this enough. This failure at the box office has been heartbreaking. Hopefully this doesn’t effect any of the cast or crew’s careers.
Other: I got a job! I’m gonna be a kind of social media coordinator at a big company in downtown Vancouver. I’m not gonna go into too much detail for now but it will be pretty exciting I think.
That’s all for now, hopefully I can get my act together and actually update this thing a bit better in the future.
… or not, it depends on if I have the will to update it more than once a month.
So in the event that the title of this post is completely alien to you then clearly you have not seen Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Four words my spell check hates for obvious reasons. TTGL is an anime whose soul function is to outdo everything every other giant robot anime has ever tried to do. The battles in the first episode are on par with the final battles of some shows and by the end, the very fabric of reality is a casualty in the fights that take place. I just finished watching the series and the two movies and by doing so I’ve exceeded my recommended intake of awesome for this year. A quick search of the series on TVTropes.com (most addictive website since the hamster dance) yields a list of moments deemed to be Crowning Moments of Awesome longer than my arm. The whole bottom 10% of the list is essentially a recap of the second film because not five minutes goes by without another CMOA.
Of course, anime isn’t the only thing keeping me busy these days. I’ve been doing some web design contract work. This has been a really cool experience, not only is it more practice in web design which is always good but I’ll also get some money which is a nice change of pace from my usual status of being as poor as dirt.
And in other news, I’ll be spending the weekend at a friends house in Gibsons. A weekend full of tabletop RPGs, anime, video games, and general badassery will be had.
To be honest I had a tough time coming up with the name for this blog, I’m pretty sure that I summed it up pretty well though. I am really not a very good blogger and nobody should follow my example, particularly when it comes to updates. My last actual update was 3 weeks ago and it’s not like stuff hasn’t been happening to me. I’m going to go ahead and list some of the more exciting things here so that I can feel better about my blogging abilities…
Job Interviews: After weeks of fruitless emailing and craigslisting and even some kijijing I managed to get two interviews for freelance web development. I’m a little nervous about this because all of my web design knowledge is self taught and I may be doing it all horribly wrong. Here’s hoping all my self doubt is misplaced.
Music: I’ve started listening to The Mountain Goats, and by “started listening to” what I really mean is “done nothing but listen to”. That’s the way I process new bands, I don’t get around to it very often but if I find someone I like I’ll get their entire discography and listen to everything, picking out what I like and don’t like. In case anyone’s interested my favourite Mountain Goats album is The Sunset Tree and my favourite song is either This Year or Lion’s Teeth.
Movies: I saw Toy Story 3. See this movie. That is all.
TV: My girlfriend and I are in the process of watching Battlestar Galactica. We’re into the fantastic season 3 so far. I’ve already watched the series once but I love going back and rewatching series like this, particularly when I have the opportunity to do it alongside someone who’s never watched it before. Eureka and Warehouse 13 also both came back this month and I’m pretty happy with how both of them turned out. The Eureka premier felt a little thin but I think that having James Callis (Gaius Frakking Baltar) join the cast will be a huge boon for the series, even if his American accent felt forced. Warehouse 13 came back and I’m very excited for the H G Wells storyline. Other than that TV has been pretty slow for a while. Hopefully Caprica will be back soon although I haven’t heard any news about it for a while.
Games: I’m still in the process of beating Final Fantasy XIII. I’m a completionist so I want to get all of my characters maxed out before I fight the final boss. This is a long and involved process for a game like FF but I’m devoted now. I was on vacation for a week so I got a chance to look through the older games I have installed on my computer. I ended up playing a few rounds of Sins of a Solar Empire but I didn’t realize how badly I suck so that didn’t last long.
Other: I recently caught up on the Vlogbrothers on youtube. I haven’t actively followed a video blog since Ze Frank’s The Show so this has been pretty fun for me. I’m now both a Sportsracer and a Nerdfighter so I feel that I should combine them into one title like Sportsfighter or Nerdracer or possibly even SNpeorrdtfsirgahcteerr. Probably not that last one though.
OTHER other: I met a girl today at the mall who was in a full Charmander costume. I wish I had thought to take a picture with her or at least talk to her for more than three seconds.
I haven’t been using my iPod much lately. I synced the other day and saw more than 50 unlistened to podcasts waiting for me. I installed IOS4 today though and suddenly I find myself trolling the app store for good deals and reopening apps I haven’t used for months. Amazing how a bit of new firmware can be so fun. I just wish they’d given me home screen backgrounds on my iPod touch 2nd gen. If a jailbroken iPod can do it why can’t I?
So as some of my friends here may know I’ve recently been working on a flash game, my first flash game to be precise, to try to make a bit of extra money while I’m in school. My girlfriend Samantha has been taking care of the art and music while I’ve been doing the design and programming. I’m happy to say that the game is now complete and I’d really appreciate it if you’d all go and check it out. You can find it at http://bit.ly/99jiSN and I’ll also be putting a link in the sidebar. It’s called Wordworks and it’s a spelling puzzle game. I hope to do some more action based games in the future but as a case study this should be really interesting. I’ll keep you all updated on how this experiment goes financially lol.
It’s official, Lost is over. I’m not gonna talk too much about my theories and speculation because honestly I feel that it wrapped itself up rather nicely. I don’t think they could have possibly done a better job with it. That being said, I look forward to the Hurley and Ben’s Fantasy Island spinoff…
So it’s been a while since I’ve posted here so I thought I’d drop by and post some of my reactions and experiences from the Game Developers Conference of Canada 2010 which ended last Friday. For the last two years now I’ve volunteered at the conference. Volunteering is a great opportunity and I suggest that others look into this option for future conferences. I worked a five hour shift on Thursday and got to go to the rest of the conference for free. It was a great time and I look forward to going again next year.
In case you’ve never heard of it, The Dark Tower is author Stephen King’s magnum opus, a series of seven novels who’s events span King’s multiverse touching many of his other stories along the way such as The Stand and Salem’s Lot to name a few.
The script will be written by Akiva Goldsman and Rod Howard will direct. To be honest I’m not totally happy with this choice. The duo have A Beautiful Mind under their belt but that certainly doesn’t qualify them for a sci-fi/fantasy/western epic like DT and the only other thing on Goldsman’s resume that I enjoy is Fringe. The fact that he’s been behind three terrible Will Smith movies (I, Robot, I Am Legend, and Hancock) in a row also doesn’t instill me with a great deal of confidence. I’m gonna reserve judgment however until we find out who’ll be playing Roland.
I support the idea of having the series being shortened to three films. A lot of the fourth novel can be dropped as it’s just an elaborately described flashback and I’m sure that some of the shorter sidequest style adventures could be dropped without losing the grand feel of the story.
I strongly suggest that people take a look at this series, it’s truly an amazing read.
